Terms Flashcards
Law of Multiple proportions
Daltons theory of: if two elements A and B combine to form more than one compound, the masses of B that combine wi h a given mass of A create a ratio of small whole numbers.
Plum pudding theory
The electrons of an atom are spread out through a positive field like raisins in pudding.
Law of constant composition
Daltons theory that: the total mass of materials present after a chemical reaction is the same as the total mass present before the reaction.
Nuclear model
Ruthefords theory that: all positive charge of an atom resides in the extremely small and dense nucleus. While the negative electrons fly randomly around the nucleus. Most of the atom is empty space.
Chemistry
The study of matter and the changes the matter undergoes.
Chemists do what 3 fundamental things?
- Make new types of matter; materials, substances, or combination of substances with desired properties.
- Measure the properties of matter.
- Develop models that explain or predict the properties of matter.
