What is a tension headache?
attacks of headache (usually bilateral) which are pressing or tightening in quality and of mild to moderate intensity lasting minutes to days
associations- tension headache?
-stress
-depression
-alcohol
-skipping meal
-dehydration
presentation- tension headache?
Bilateral non-throbbing headache
-episodic or chronic
-presing tingling quality
-mild to moderate
-absence N+V
-absence photophobia or phonophobia
Signs:
-associated tenderness of scalp muscles (as contraction is the primary source of pain)
treatment- tension headache?
Simple anagesics (overuse can also cause headache)
Relaxation techniques
Hot towel over area
Reassurance
A 21 year old woman presents to the GP with a headache, which she says has come and gone for months. Upon further questioning, she reveals that the headache is bilateral and feels “tight”. Neurological examination shows no physical abnormalities; however, her scalp muscles are tender on palpation. What is the most likely diagnosis?
