Explain acute telogen effluvium
Stressor → abrupt transit of atleast 20% hair follicles from
Anagen ( active growth phase ) → telogen ( resting phase) → physiological hair loss after 3-4 months
When does hair fall stop?
2-3 months
Rx - minoxidil 2%
Ix?
History
Trichogram- shows telogen count of 25%
What would patient history look like?
Decreased hair volume without well defined alopecia patches
Pull test - typically +ve
Diffuse hair loss
Severe cases all - anemia & beau’s lines of nails
Chronic telogen effluvium?
Persists > months
Pt. Complains of losing > 100 hair over long periods
Happen to women 40 -50 yrs of age
Triggers that precipitate telogen?
Infections → typhoid, malaria, dengue, COVID, chikungunya
Childbirth
Emotional stress → exam, marital discord
Minor / major surgery
Hemorrhage→ surgical, traumatic
Anagen effluvium is seen in?
Patients receiving chemotherapy
