Rifampicin

What are the major side effects of each of the RIPE drugs?
Rifampicin - Elevated liver enzymes
- Pink stained body secretions
Isoniazide - Polyneuropathy due to B6 deficiency (prescribe pyridoxine to prevent this)
Pyrazinamide - Hepatic toxicity
- Gout
Ethambutol - optic retrobulbar neuritis
When is greater than 6 months of treatment required?
CNS TB
When is prednisolone used to supplement RIPE treatment?
When there is CNS and pericardial involvement
What constitutes MDR TB?
TB that is resistant to rifampicin and ioniazid
What are the CSF findings in CNS TB?
Protein >2-3g/L
Glucose <0.5 blood glucose
What are some predisposing host factors for TB?
Immunosuppression
Chronic disease
IVDU, Alcohol
Malnutrition
What is the classic appearance of a TB cavity?
Thin, regular wall
No air-fluid level
