What is the pathophysiology of Lupus?
Multisystem autoantibody attack and immune complex formation against products of apoptosis that are abnormally exposed to the immune system
What Ix can be used to monitor the activity of lupus and complications?
Activity
- CRP, ESR
- FBE - Hb and WBCs
- Anti-ds-DNA antibody titres (ANA isn’t informative for activity)
- UEC, MSU (kidneys)
- Vitamin D
- LFT
- Complement C3 and C4 (not routine)
What is the name of the rash commonly seen in lupus?
Malar rash
What is SLE management medically?
Immunosuppresion:
- Hydroxychloroquine
- Steroids
- Biologics
What are the antibodies specific to SLE that can be used from diagnosis?
Anti-RO

4+ of the following:
S - Serositis
O - Oral Ulcers
A - Arthritis/Athralgia
P - Photosensitivity
B - Blood disorder
R - Renal Impairment
A - ANA+
I - Anti-Smith, -Ro, -La
N - Neurological symptoms
M - Malar rash
D - Discoid rash
What is the pattern of arthritis typically seen in SLE?
Symmetrical polyarthritis
What are the most common presenting signs and symptoms of SLE?
Arthritis

Renal impairment/proteinuria
