T2: Repro Flashcards
What is a ovary?
small, bean- shaped organs located near kidneys
ova (eggs) and hormones (estrogen, progesterone (P4))
What is an oviduct?
small, thin tubes that transport the ova from ovari
what are the different types of placental attachments?
diffuse: surface (pigs and horses)
cotyledonary: multiple discrete areas
zonary: complete or incomplete band (dogs, cats)
discoid: discrete, discoid in shape
How many mammary glands do queens have
4 pairs, up to 6 in larger breeds
When is puberty for dogs
6-10 months for small breeds
18-24 months for giant
– spontaneous ovulatory: ova released periodically depending on hormonal environment
when does ovulation occur
2-10 ova in small
5-20 in large breeds
gestation period for dogs
63 days from conception
what is superfetation
estrus may be produced during gestation, usually second set is too young to survive at birth
what is pseudopregnancy
false pregnancy
common in cats and dogs
treatment is often not recommended
what is pyometra
common in dogs or cats
increasing levels of P4 after ovulation: hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the endometrial glands of the uterus
What is eclampsia: Puerperal hypocalcemia
acute and life-threatening condition usually seen at peak lactation, 2-3 weeks after whelping
small breed bitches with large litters
signs: tremors, weakness, puerperal tetany
rare in queens: may occur in early lactation
hypocalcemia
most likely from loss of Ca 2+, into the milk and from inadequate dietary calcium intake
recovery and diagnosis of eclampsia
supplementation with oral calcium during pregnancy
– Calcium absorption from the intestine decreases (Vit D)
–inhibits parathyroid secretion
– stimulates calcitonin secretion
tetany occurs as a result of spontaneous repetitive firing of motor nerve fibers
What is Monoestrus?
one estrus during breeding season
What is the estrous cycle?
-proestrus
-estrus (heat)
-metestrus/ diestrus
-anestus
German Shepherds –> 4- 4.5 months
Basenjis –> once per year (fall)
