T16 GENETICS Flashcards
Karyotype
a diagram showing the number and structure of chromosomes in an organism.
sex chromosome
an x or y chromosome
autosome
a chromosome that isn’t a sex chromosome
Diploid
having chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs, with one inherited from the father and one inherited from the mother.
gene
a length of DNA/ sequence of bases coding for a specific polypeptide.
genotype
alleles present in an organism, unaffected by the environment.
homozygous
pair of identical alleles for a gene
heterozygous
two different alleles for a gene.
dominant
an allele that is always expressed in the phenotype when present.
recessive
an allele that is only expressed when no dominant allele is present.
pure breeding
homozygous individuals bred as a result of breeding homozygous genotypes repeatedly
huntingtons
autosomal dominant condition affecting neurones
cystic fibrosis
recessive autosomal condition
mutation of CFTR transport gene for chloride ions outside of cell affecting mucus fluidity
codominance
when 2 alleles are both expressed to form a third phenotype. both alleles have an effect on the the phenotype of a heterozygous organism.
