What disorder is a result of sores in the lining of the stomach or duodenum?
Peptic ulcers
How do peptic ulcers occur?
The protective mucus of the stomach has weakened and the tissues become inflamed. Heliobacter pylori bacteria attach themselves to the wall and prevent the area from producing mucus
What two disorders can cause inflammation of the intestines and what disease type are they grouped under?
Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease
What is the difference between Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis?
Crohn’s can affect and inflame any part of the digestive tract (although it is most commonly found in the ileum and cecum) and it can be patched (disconnected), while ulcerative colitis affects only the large intestine

Describe the causes and effects of cirrhosis
Damage to the liver is irreversible and healthy tissue has been replaced by scar tissue. Leads to the development of a fatty liver, which is diagnosed by a blood test. Caused by hepatitis C and alcoholism
What are gallstones?
Small, hard masses that form in the galbladder
How are gallstones formed and what causes them?
Cholesterol in the bile precipitates and forms crystals. Usually caused by obesity, high alcohol intake, and heredity
How are gallstones treated?
Medication or ultrasound shockwaves to disintegrate the stones. In severe cases, the galbladder must be removed
Explain the difference between type I and type II diabetes
Type I diabetes is when there is not enough insulin in the blood. Type II diabetes is when the body cannot properly use the insulin that is there.
