SYRINGOMYELIA classic presentation
A
- patient comes in with bilateral slowly progressive neck and shoulder pain with wasting in their hands
- can have a rapid progression, sudden onset or have no progression
- common age b/w 20-50

A
- multiple sclerosis
- gullian-barre
- transverse myelitis

supporting factors
A
- cerv. spine involvement
- male sex
- b/w 30-40 yrs
- LOSS OF BLADDER FUNCTION
- PARTIAL HORNERS
- wasting of small hand muscles and burning sensation on fingers or forearms

refuting factors
A
- childhood or late adulthood onset
- lower extremities are more affected than upper
- unilateral symptoms

referrals
A
- MRI
- CT to look for tumour or hydrocephalus
- surgery to inc. cerebellum space and remove tumour
- radiation therapy for tumours

contraindications
A
- avoid HVLA in the neck
- avoid side posture for neck restraint

- prone diversified for thoracic

care plan
A
2 x a week for 4 weeks then progress

A
- avoiding activities that involve straining or heavy lifting
- increase upper extremity muscle strength
