MCL tear classic presentation
A
- person comes in with charp medial knee pain after the knee was forced into valgus position and felt tearing sensation
- overuse injury in swimmers

- ACL tear
- medial meniscus
- Pes anserine bursitis

A
- valgus blow to the knee
- sharp medial knee pain
- swelling at time of injury
- medial knee bruising and swelling over several days
- tenderness over MCL

refuting factors
A
- non-traumatic
- popping sensation
- feeling of locking or catching
- severe inability to bear weight

relevant orthos
A
- apley’s distraction produces medial knee pain
- no instability but pain = grade 1 sprain
- laxity only when flexed = grade 2 tear
- laxity in both positions = grade 3 tear

contraindications
A
- for grade 3 avoid weight bearing
