Syringe Lecture Flashcards
Define gauge
refers to the inner measurement or opening of a needle
Is a 16 gauge needle larger or smaller in diameter than a 20 gauge needle
The higher the gauge, the smaller the size of the needle. The 20 gauge needle is smaller in diameter than the 16 gauge needle.
What unit is the length of a needle measured with
inches
Define the lumen
the inside diameter of the needle
Define the bevel
the angled surface formed on the tube when sharpened to make a needle point
Discriminate between the shaft and the hub of the needle
The shaft is the long slender stem of the needle, the hub is the plastic or metal base that connects the needle to the syringe barrel.
Describe a spinal needle and what it is used for
Spinal needles are very long and thin needles that are used for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection and epidurals
Describe a biopsy needle and what it is used for
A type of thin, hollow needle of “guillotine type” that is used for soft tissue biopsies. (Tru-cut biopsy method). It uses a vacuum system that pulls the mass into the trough of the needle and out of the body for sampling purposes. Can also be used for bone marrow and bone biopsy samples using the jamshidi needle.
What should you be cautious about when drawing into a syringe
Be careful not to pull the plunger from the barrel when drawing from the syringe. Break the seal first before you begin drawing to release pressure and make drawing easier.
Where should you measure the volume on a syringe
At the top of the rubber stopper
Define the barrel of a syringe
where the demarcations are printed
Define the hub (tip) of a syringe
where needle is attached
4 types: catheter tip, Luer lock, slip tip, eccentric
How is syringe size measured
measured in cc or ml
Named by total volume in cc (ml): 1,3,6,12,20,35,60
Describe the Luer lock syringe tip
secure, screw-type connection
Describe the slip syringe tip
slip or push on connection
