2
Q

Is a 16 gauge needle larger or smaller in diameter than a 20 gauge needle

A

The higher the gauge, the smaller the size of the needle. The 20 gauge needle is smaller in diameter than the 16 gauge needle.

6
Q

Discriminate between the shaft and the hub of the needle

A

The shaft is the long slender stem of the needle, the hub is the plastic or metal base that connects the needle to the syringe barrel.

Q

Describe a biopsy needle and what it is used for

A

A type of thin, hollow needle of “guillotine type” that is used for soft tissue biopsies. (Tru-cut biopsy method). It uses a vacuum system that pulls the mass into the trough of the needle and out of the body for sampling purposes. Can also be used for bone marrow and bone biopsy samples using the jamshidi needle.

Q

What should you be cautious about when drawing into a syringe

A

Be careful not to pull the plunger from the barrel when drawing from the syringe. Break the seal first before you begin drawing to release pressure and make drawing easier.

16
Q

Describe the eccentric syringe tip

A

off center tip used for surface veins or artery injections

17
Q

Describe the catheter syringe tip

A

longer and tapered slip tip design used for irrigation or with tubing

18
Q

True or False: cc and ml are the same in amount. Ex: 1cc = 1ml

A

True

19
Q

True or False: Each syringe size has different demarcations for measuring fluid

A

True
Ex: 1cc syringe can have demarcations of 0.01 and 0.1

20
Q

Name two types of special syringes

A

Insulin
Tuberculin (TB)

21
Q

What is special about insulin syringes

A

Insulin is measured in units. Example: 40 units/ml.
You must use the syringe that is calibrated for the correct concentration of insulin to ensure a correct dose.

22
Q

Name two types of catheters

A

IV and urine

23
Q

Name 7 types of tubes

A

Gastric
Gastrostomy
Nasoesophageal
Nasogastric
Esophagostomy
Endotracheal
Tracheostomy

24
Q

What are the two types of lumen for IV catheters

A

Double lumen and triple lumen

25
Q

What is the purpose of an IV catheter

A

Mainly to administer fluids and medications
Blood tests

26
Q

What are the three types of urinary catheter

A

Tomcat
Red rubber
Foley
