Sustainable Nutrition 2 Flashcards
Where does food rescue fit in the food supply chain?
Food rescue, also called food recovery, food salvage or surplus food redistribution, is the practice of obtaining edible food that would otherwise go to waste from places such as farms, produce markets, grocery stores, restaurants, or dining facilities and distributing it to local emergency food programs
What SDGs does food rescue address?
Responsible consumption and production
Zero hunger
Good health
Clean water and sanitation
Economic growth
Life below water and life on land
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are those gases in the atmosphere that raise the surface temperature of planets such as the Earth
During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere, warming the earth’s surface. At night the earth’s surface cools, releasing heat back into the air but some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
What is the impact of an increase in greenhouse gases?
Causes warming and is affecting various aspects of climate, including surface air and ocean temperatures, precipitation, and sea levels
How can we reduce our greenhouse house gas emissions?
Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by making power on-site with renewables and other climate-friendly energy resources. Examples include rooftop solar panels, solar water heating, small-scale wind generation, fuel cells powered by natural gas or renewable hydrogen, and geothermal energy
What is life cycle assessment?
Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a process of evaluating the effects that a product has on the environment over the entire period of its life thereby increasing resource-use efficiency and decreasing liabilities
