Proteins 2 Flashcards
What is protein digestion?
Chewing, peristalsis. Physical and chemical digestion. Food in stomach: HCl and Pepsin. Pancreatic and intestinal proenzymes. Proenzymes activated by enteropeptidase
Protein metabolism
Peptides broken down to amino acids in enterocytes. Amino acids transported to liver via hepatic portal vein
Amino acid pool
Four possible fates for an amino acid when it joins pool:
1. Used to make/form dispensable amino acids - transamination
2. Used to make new proteins - body protein synthesis
3. Used to make other compounds - biosynthesis
4. Used for energy - catabolism and oxidation
What is the vegetarian diet?
A person who does not eat meat or fish but eats eggs and dairy. No beef, lamb, pork, chicken, fish, shellfish
What is the vegan diet?
A person who does not eat any animal foods or foods with animal products in them; may also avoid honey
