What is obesity and overweight?
Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. Differences in distribution of fat, amount of excess fat stored and associated health consequences between individuals
What is a BMI?
How much extra weight you have is the amount of excess fat stored
BMI = weight/height ^2
Best correlates with body fat and is fairly simple to work out
Increasing BMI with increasing body fat is about 0.8, 8/10 people will show that if you increase BMI you increase body fat
Higher BMI more associated with adverse health consequences
Healthy BMI is 18.5-25
Consequences of obesity
Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis), some cancers (endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gall bladder, kidney and colon)
How do people gain weight?
People gain weight by consuming more energy in than they are giving out, energy imbalance, consuming too much food, too big portions, more energy dense food
