Lipids 2 Flashcards
Process of Lipid digestion
Formation of fat globules, lingual lipase does some digestion but is minor, most digestion occurs in gall bladder with bile acids released emulsifying fat and lipases in the pancreas and intestine break down emulsified fat to monoglycerides, glycerol and fatty acids
How are fat globules broken down?
Fat globules -> bile acids and formation of micelles in GI tract. Micelles absorbed into intestinal cells and are formed into chylomicrons (type of proteins) which goes into lymph and goes into liver
What is a lipoprotein?
Biochemical assembly whose primary purpose is to transport hydrophobic liquid (i.e. fat) molecules in water, as in blood or extracellular fluid
Lipids (fat) —> Blood (water)
What is a high density Lipoprotein (HDL)?
High density LP are coming from liver, pick up cholesterol from body’s cell and deliver it to the liver for excretion. 25% of blood cholesterol
What is a low density Lipoprotein (LDL)?
Low density LP which are formed as cells remove lipids from VLDL and deliver lipids (in particular cholesterol) to parts of body (muscle, liver). 65% of blood cholesterol
What is a very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)?
Very low density LP are formed by liver cells and they deliver lipids to the body’s cells (muscle, fat). 10% of blood cholesterol
What are chylomicrons?
Chylomicrons deliver dietary lipids to most of bodies cells (muscle, fat), as some cells remove lipids from chylomicrons it becomes chylomicrons remnant which is removed from the blood at the liver
