Q
Try to state the sequence of steps required to perform a surgical scrub
A
- Turn on the tap to produce a gentle stream of water.
- Keeping forearms higher than the elbows at all times, wet the arms and hands and apply liquid soap to all surfaces.
- Work the soap into a lather and spread over the hands and arms to 5 cm above the elbow.
- With the fingers under the stream of water, clean the nails with an orange stick.
- Repeat step 3 using a surgical scrub solution.
- Take a sterile brush, moisten it under the stream of water and apply the surgical scrub solution.
- Scrub the nails using a straight stroke. Make sure the bristles of the brush clean under the nails.
- Starting with the little finger, scrub each of the four planes of each finger in straight strokes. Continue to scrub the palm of the hand using a circular motion.
- Wash the back of the hand and arm.
- If using two brushes, discard the first brush into the sink and take the second brush in the scrubbed hand. If not, rinse the brush and add scrub solution before transferring to the other hand.
- Repeat the process for the remaining hand and forearm.
- Maintaining the hands above the elbows, rinse both hands thoroughly and allow the water to drain into the sink.
- Repeat the above procedure, but this time do not include the elbows.
- Rinse hands, then dry them using a sterile towel.
- Using separate quarters of the towel, dry each hand and arm.
