Surface Infections Flashcards
What is a surface?
Interface between a solid and either a liquid or gas
What viruses effect the skin?
HPV
Herpes simplex
What gram positive bacteria can affect the skin?
Staph aureus
Coagulase negative staph
Corynebacterium
What gram negative bacteria can affect the skin?
Enterobacteriaceae
What fungi can affect the skin?
Yeasts
Dermatophytes
What parasites can affect the skin?
Mites
What flora can affect the eye?
Coagulase negative staph
What flora can affect the nasopharynx?
Neisseria meningitidis
Strep pneumoniae
Haemophilus influenzae
What flora can affect the mouth?
Viridans strep
Neisseria
Lactobacillus
What flora can affect the stomach?
Helicobacter
Strep
Staph
What flora can affect the intestine?
Bacteriodes
Coliforms
Clostridium
What flora can affect the utretha?
Enterobacteriaceae
Lactobacilli
What flora can affect the vagina?
Lactobacilli
Diptheroids
Micrococci
What are commensals?
Microorganisms carried on the skin and mucosal surfaces - usually harmless
How do people get infections on surfaces?
Invasion
Migration
Innoculation
Haematogenous
What is invasion?
Transfer from surface into tissue
What is migration?
Travels from area to another
What is inoculation?
Into a surgical site / prosthetic joint
What is haematogenous?
Enters blood stream
What are some external surface infections?
Cellulitis Pharyngitis Conjunctivitis UTI Gastroenteritis
What are some examples of internal surface infections?
Endocarditis
Vasculitis
Septic arthritis
What is the pathogenesis of surface infections?
Adherence
Biofilm formation
Invasion + multiplication
What is adherence?
Bind to prosthetic surface or cell membrane by pili or fimbriae
What is biofilm formation?
Bacteria are embedded in ‘slime’ - an extracellular complex secreted by microorganisms
