16
Q

What is invasion?

A

Transfer from surface into tissue

17
Q

What is migration?

A

Travels from area to another

18
Q

What is inoculation?

A

Into a surgical site / prosthetic joint

19
Q

What is haematogenous?

A

Enters blood stream

20
Q

What are some external surface infections?

A
Cellulitis
Pharyngitis
Conjunctivitis
UTI
Gastroenteritis
21
Q

What are some examples of internal surface infections?

A

Endocarditis
Vasculitis
Septic arthritis

22
Q

What is the pathogenesis of surface infections?

A

Adherence
Biofilm formation
Invasion + multiplication

23
Q

What is adherence?

A

Bind to prosthetic surface or cell membrane by pili or fimbriae

24
Q

What is biofilm formation?

A

Bacteria are embedded in ‘slime’ - an extracellular complex secreted by microorganisms

25
Q

What types of host response can occur?

A

Pyogenic = neutrophils -> pus

Granulomatous = fibroblasts/lymphocytes/macrophages -> nodular inflammatory lesions
