Surface anatomy Week 2 Flashcards
how can you palpate the spine of the scapula
this is the long long in your back that shoudl stick out between the supra and infra spinatus muscles
how can you palpate the root of the spine of the scap
you will need to find the spine and then palpate your way down the spine and there you will find the root
how can you palpate the acromion process
this is the most lateral part of the scapula so you will palpate up the spine of the scap until you hit the top of the shoulder
how can you palpate the inferior angle of the scap
you will either palapte down the vertebral border or have them put back there arm so you can see it extend out. this is also abound thoracic veretra T7
how can you palpate the superior angle of the scap
the best way to do this is to palpate the verebral border and work your way up to the top OR you can find C7
how can you palpate the coracoid process
place MP joint of thumb on acromion then press in anteiroly and medially. there could be some pain to this
how can you palpate the sternal-clavicular joint
you can feel by the jugular notch where they connect
–has moderate mobility and high stability
how can you palpate the acromial-clavicular joint
this is the flat apart. you want to work your way up the clavicle ( it will raise up a bit then there will be a notch where they meet.
- low mobility and low stability and is the most commonly separated
how can you palpate the scapulothoracic joint
this isnt a real joint but is just the motion of the scap along the thoracic wall
- to palapte you would have them wing back there arm so you can see the ridge and then it is just under the scap by the subscapularis
how can you palpate the greater tubercle
this is the most lateral plapatable point of the humerus. you want them to internal rotate the humerous first then feel for the tubercle sticking out
how can you palpate the lesser tubercle
you will need to find the greater tubercle first then have them abduct their arm and you should feel the movement of the greater T. and now feel the lesser T.
how can you palpate the bicipital groove
this can be found between the greater and lesser tubercles
*the bicips brachie is some times thought to be the 5th rotator club
how can you palpate the deltoid tubersoity
this can be found at the end of the diamand shaped M.
know the action of the delts and the rotator cuff
- delts - anterior, middle, poster
* rotator, supraspinalus , infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapulars **some say the long head of the biceps is the 5th
how do you find the rotator cuff muscles from the outside
place your thumb on the Lesser tubercle of the humerus and then place you first three fingers next to it and that should be the superior , middle and inferior facets
how can you palpate the rhomboids
they are both found on the vertebral border of the scap
you should have the person go prone and lay the dorsal side of the hand flat on back. then you can fill the movement at the root of the scap when they lift up
how can you palpate the serratus anterior
this is the boxer muscle and is on the anterior surface of the vertebral border and it main action is scap stabilization when doing activities.
to palpate have the person lay on their back and have them lift arm straight up and you push down as they are punching up and you can see muscle move.
how can you palpate the latissimus dorsi
to palpate lay in pron with their arm laying on their side with their thumb pointing up then preform actions
how can you palpate the teres major
to palpate lay in pron with their arm laying on their side with their thumb pointing up then preform actions
how can you palpate the pectoralis clavicular head
to palpate have the person lay on their back and lift arm up in the air. as they perform horizontal adduction resist that action and feel and the inferior anterior delt
how can you palpate the pectoralis sternal head
to palpate have the person lay on their back and lift arm up in the air. as they perform and angled down motion toward their opposite hip and resist that action and feel and the inferior anterior delt
how can you palpate the pectoralis minor
preform the “OH MY’” position with their dorsal hand on their forehead. you can see there minor popping up in the axillary. then have them lift their elbow up and you can sort of feel this muscle action.
