superior osteology Flashcards
articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage that covers those load bearing surface of bones that are involved with synovial joints
endosteum
ct. proper lining the medullary cavity of a bone
perosteum
ct proper that lines the outside of the bone. it is held on by perforating fibers
flat bones
generally looked flattened. ( sternum, ribs, scapulae, clavicles, ossa coxae, skull bones)
irregular bones
have jutting processes ( vertebrae)
long bones
88 long bones in free parts of each superior limb( humerus, radius,ulna,5 metacarpal bones, 14 phalanges . Inferior limb-( femur, tibia, fibula, 5 metatarsal bones, 14 phalanges)
sesamoid bones
“seed like” that are embedded in tendons, platella and small ones at the base of the pollex
short bones
carpal and tarsal bones
physical functinon of bones
1.body shape 2. protection. 3. locomotion
metabolic function of bone
- hemopoiesis 2. fat depository 3. calcium/ phosphate storage.
epiphyseal cartilage
these are present when a long bone is growing.
metaphysis
portion of diaphysis adjacent to one of the epiphyseal cartilage. it has the greatest metabolic activity of the long bone
axial skeleton
head, spine, sternum, ribs bony sacrum.
apendicular skeleton
free parts of the body( including clavicle and scapula
