Superficial Leg Muscles Flashcards
Superior Surface of the Patella
Four quadriceps femoris muscles of the thigh converge on
Patella Ligament
Arising from the the inferior border and extending to the prominent tibial tuberosity.
Iliotibial tract
Location: posterior lateral aspect of the thigh
Function: thickening of fascia lata
Important stabilizing action at the knee joint.
Biceps femoris
Posterior to the iliotibial tract
Dorsiflexion
Motion of the foot
Location: bending the top dorsal surface of the foot to lift the toes
Plantarflexion
Motion of the foot
moving the bottom or sole of the foot to raise the heel
Inversion
Motion of the foot
rotation of the sole inward
Eversion
Motion of the foot
rotation of the sole laterally
Tibialis Anterior
Location: extends from the upper two thirds of the tibia to the medial cuneifrom and base of the first metatarsal bones
Function: acts to both dorsiflex and invert the foot
Shin splints
Occurs when fibers of the tibialis anterior muscles separate from the tibia
Peroneus Tertius
Location: originate from the fibula, tendon that crosses the top of the foot to attach to the 5th metatarsal bone
Function: assists the tibialis anterior muscle in dorsiflexion of the foot.
Peroneus Longus
Location: Originates at the fibula. has long tendon that surves around the lateral malleolus of the tibula, crosses the sole of the foot to reach the medial cuneiform and the first metatarsal bones
Peroneus Brevis
Location: originates at the fibula. Includes a tendon that curves around the lateral malleolus of the fibula, attaches to the nearby 5th metatarsal bone.
Peroneus muscles (function)
alll act to evert the foot
four muscles related to plantar flexion
Gastrocneumius, soleus, peroneus longus, and peroneus brevis.
Gastrocnemius muscles
Location: arises from the medial and lateral condyles of the femur to embrace either side of the popliteal fossa located behind the knee joint,
Function: has two heads, because it crosses the knee joint, Action:flexion of the leg
Soleus
Location: deep to the gastrocnemius and is quite flat, Originates from the tibia and fibula to join the gastrocnemius
Achilles (Calcaneal) tendon
Shared common tendon btwn the soleus and gastrocnemius
Location: inserts on the calcaneus
Gastrocnemius and soleus (Function)
calif muscles act in powerful plantarflexion of the foot, lifting the heel when we push off in walking and running
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Location: 4 tendons that reach the lateral four toes (Does not include the great toe)
Extensor Digitorum Brevis
Location: 4 tendons that reach the medial four toes.
Extensor Hallucis Longus and Brevis
Location: tendon to the great big toe
Longus muscles
Location: extrinsic (Outside the foot)
Brevis
Location: intrinsic (Originating within the foot)
Extensor Retinaculum
Holds down the tendons of the extrinsic muscles
Made of resilient fibers
Location: crossing the anterior and lateral surfaces of the ankle
