Superficial and Deep Forearm Muscles (ANTERIOR) Flashcards
Biceps Brachii and Brachialis muscles
Location: Cross the anterior elbow joint
Function: Flexion of the forearm
Brachioradialis Muscle
Location: Descending on the lateral side of the forearm, inserts upon the styloid process of the radius
Function: Assisting the biceps brachii and brachialis in the flexion of the forearm
5 Superficial Muscles Invovled in flexion or pronation
Alll attach to the medial epicondyle of the humerus, pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor digitorum superficialis
Pronator Teres
Function: rotates the palm backward
Flexor Carpi Radialis
Function: flexes the wrist on the lateral side
Palmaris Longus
Location: includes a long tendon which expands to form a dense connective tissue sheet (palmar aponeurosis) in the hand
Function: tense the palm and assists in flexion of the wrist.
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
Function: flexes the wrist on the medial side
Fexlor Digitorum Superficialis
Location: sends tendons to the middle phalanx of the medial four digits (Index, long, ring and little fingers, but not the thumb)
Function: acts in flexion of the proximal and middle phalanges, and assists in the flexion of the wrist.
MP Joints
moved in waving motions
PIP joints
May also be independently moved with each digit flexing separately.
Three deep muscles involved in flexion or pronation
Flexor pollicis longus, flexor digitorum profundus, pronator quadratus
Flexor Pollicis Longus
Location: To the thumb distal phalanx
Function:
Flexor Digitorum Profundus
Location: Distal phalanx of the medial four digits (Index, long, ring and little fingers)
Function: Allows (in some people) independent flexion of only the fingertips in these digits
Pronator Quadratus
Location: Found near the wrist
Function: Flat square muscle, contracts with the pronator teres, in producing rotation of the hand, with the palm moving in a posterior (dorsal) direction
Thenar Eminence
Two sets of intrinsic muscles that form the prominent bulge on the thumb side
