Shoulder Joint
Example of a synovial, ball and ocket type of joint
The joint is very unstable, because the head of the humerus is much larger than the glenoid cavity of the scapula (More than three times the size of the socket)
= dislocation of the humerus
Shoulder
Protected from above by the acromion and coracoid processes of the scapula, the clavicle and by various ligaments.
Articular capsule of the shoulder Joint
consists of a dense outer fibrous capsule with an inner delicate synovial membrane
Long head of the biceps brachii muscle (location)
Location: Originates at the supraglenoid tuberosity of the scapula, with the tendon passing through the articular capsule and it emerges from the capsule to lie in the intertubercular groove of the humerus

Function: Passage of a tendon through a joint capsule is quite unusual, provides strong support over the anterior surface of the head of the humerus and helps to strengthen the should joint
Three ligaments of the shoulder
Unite the clavicle, to the acromion and coracoid processes of the scaupula
Coracoacromial Ligament
Location: extends from the lateral edge of the coracoid process to the medial border of the acromion
Function: strong, flta, triangular ligament that helps to support the head of the humerus
Coracoclavicular Ligament
Location: Passes btwn the coracoid process and the conoid process of the clavicle
Function: extremely strong double ligament that helps to provide great stability of the shoulder joint
Acromioclavicular Ligament
Location: extends btwn the acromion process and the clavicle, located over the synovial acromioclavicular joint.
Scapular Notch
Location: Btwn the coracoid process and the superior border of the scapula, bridged by the superior transverse scaupular ligament
Function: converting this notch to a foramen for the passage of the suprascapular nerve
Shoulder Ligaments
Function: display remarkable strength, muscle tissue will tear, and the bones will fracture before these ligaments are injured.
