Summary of Structure of DNA Flashcards
Describe the DNA ladder
Handrails - Phosphate and sugar groups
Middle part - Bases.
Two different families of bases
1.) Purine - double ringed
2.) Pyrimidine - single ringed
T/F, purine goes with purine?
False, purines go with pyrimidines and vise versa. They are joined together by weak hydrogen bonds.
What are the two purines?
Adenine and Guanine
What are the two pyrimidines?
Cytosine and Thymine
(T/F) Cytosine and Guanine have a triple bond
True, Cytosine and Guanine have a triple bond and Adenine and Thymine have a double bond.
Define Hydrogen bonds
In between the base pairs of the two strands, holding the molecule together.
What are DNA strands? Parellel and Anti Parellel?
They are anti parellel meaning one strand goes 5’ to 3’, the other strand goes 3’ to 5’.
