History & Structure Flashcards
What does the nucleus of every cell contain?
DNA, also known as deoxyribonucleic acid.
Whats special about DNA?
DNA is the only molecule that is capable of replicating itself, essentially permitting cell division.
Where is Genetic Code contained?
Genetic Code is contained in 46 SEPARATE chromosomes that are made in DNA.
What is a Gene and where is it found?
A gene is a basic unit of hereditary, it is found on chromosomes. A gene is a specific sequence of DNA.
T/F Every code is the same?
F, Every code is of one a kind! You do not share the same code as your family members.
2 Functions of DNA
- Provide instructions to ensure continuity of life
- Provide instructions to repair worn out cell parts and construct new ones.
What is the offsprings relationship to the parents? Do they share the same DNA, why or why not?
Offspring may share structural features to parents, but they will not share the same DNA as they undergo new combinations of genes and mutations.
Define a Mutation
A change in the sequence of DNA.
