Replication of DNA Flashcards
1
Q
When does replication occur?
A
During the interphase of the cell cycle.
2
Q
What is the semi conservative replication model?
A
Where each DNA strand pairs up with a new complementary strand. Resulting in two half old half new strands of DNA.
3
Q
What happens to the free floating nucleotides?
A
The free floating nucleotides within the cell get attached to the unzipped parent strands that act as templates.
4
Q
Function of DNA
A
The molecule that governs the process of heredity.
5
Q
Function of RNA
A
Nucleic acid that plays a role in gene expression and protein synthesis.
6
Q
Major steps of Replication
A
- ) Helicase - unwinds DNA at origins of replication
2.) Primase - puts down RNA primer to start replication process
3.) DNA polymerase - adds complementary bases to leading strand ( new 5’ to 3’)
4.) Lagging Strand - grows in the 3’ to 5’ direction by the addition of the okazaki fragments
5.) DNA ligase - seals the fragments together on the lagging strand
