Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Since DNA and RNA are both made up of nucleotides, how are they different?
DNA is doube stranded, RNA is single stranded
DNA’s sugar is deoxyribose, RNA’s sugar is Ribose
Dna has thymine, RNA has uracil
DNA acts as a template for individual strands, RNA has several different roles (mRNA..tRNA..)
What are proteins made up of?
They are made up of different combinations of 20 amino acids.
What are proteins responsible for?
Proteins determine the function, structure and development of cells. Proteins are also responsible for inheritable traits.
The production of proteins is controlled by
Genes. Specific sequences in the DNA.
What is the significance of base pairs with proteins?
The order of base pairs determines what the amino acid will be.
How are the 20 amino acids made?
11 are synthesized by the body, 9 of them have to be through dieting.
Where is protein made?
In the cytoplasm.
Where do DNA molecules go/stay?
DNA molecules stay in the nucleus because they are too big to move
mRNA’s function
Takes a copy of the gene and sends it to the cytoplasm to make a protein.
