Study Guide Endochrine System Flashcards
Endocrhrine System
Glands and cells that secrete hormones
Hormone
Chemical messengers that are secreted into the bloodstream and stimulate cells and organs
Receptor
Accepts only a specific hormone
Target tissue
Organ
respond to only specific hormones that their receptors are programmed for
endochrine gland
vs
exocrine gland
Endochrine secretes into the blood stream
exocrine secretes into ducts that go to the external environment
hormone stimulation
either excite or inhibit
nervous system
vs
endochrine system
nervous: fast reacting, stops quickly, .electrical impulses, adapts quickly, localized
endochrine: slow reacting, stops slowly, homone communication, adapts slowly, blood stream distribution
pituitary gland
located below hypothalamus connected by infundibulum, in the sella turcica
2 glands, anterior/posterior
contains hormones and directed by hypothalumus to release
hypothalamus control
releases either inhibiting or excitatory hormones to the pituitary gland
Thyroid gland
located in neck below larynx
two conical lobes connected by the isthmus
composed of thyroid follicles lined with cuboidal epithelium
Parathyroids
located on posterior of thyroid gland
Andrenals
located on superior of kidneys
composed of adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla
Pancreas
located below and bhind the stomach
composed of 1-2 million cells clusters called pancreatic islets
Gonads
(testes, ovaries)
testes located in scrotum
sustentacular cells, interstitual cells
ovaries located in pelvis
granulosa cells, theca, follicles
