Structure of Small Intestine Flashcards
How is the inner surface of the small intestine adapted?
To provide maximum surface area for absorption.
What is the inner layer of the small intestine folded into?
Ridges.
What does the inner layer of the small intestine have many of?
Villi
What do villi do?
Produce an approximately tenfold increase in surface area.
What does each villi have?
Microvilli to further increase surface area.
What is inside of the villi?
Capillaries.
What enters the bloodstream through villi?
All nutrients except digested fats.
What are fats transported through?
Small vessels called lacteals.
Where do fats go through lacteals to?
Go to the lymphatic system and then the bloodstream.
How much do villi/microvilli increase surface area?
By a factor of 500.
