Pancreas: Chemical Digestion 2 Flashcards
What pH does chyme entering the small intestine have?
2.5
What is converted into what?
Prosecretin is converted into secretin.
What does the secretin do?
Stimulates the liver to make more bile and encourages the pancreas to release bicarbonate ions.
What do the bicarbonate ions do?
Neutralizes the acidic chyme and raises the pH from 2.5 to approximately 9.0.
What is inactivated by the higher pH?
Pepsin
Because of the inactivation of pepsin by the higher pH, what is protected and from what?
The small intestine is protected from the high pH of the stomach acid.
What is needed when pepsin is inactivated in the small intestine?
Other enzymes are needed to continue protein digestion.
What does secretin also regulate?
The entering of more food into the small intestine from the stomach until the current batch is digested.
