The mucosa.
What is a characteristic of the mucosa?
It is extensively folded.
What does the mucosa do?
It secretes gastric juice (digestive enzymes, acid, and mucus).
What divide rapidly in the mucosa?
Epithelial cells (every three days, lining is replaced).
What is the next layer of the stomach called?
The submucosa.
What is the submucosa made up of?
It is a layer of connective tissue (nerves and blood vessels).
What is the third layer of the stomach called?
The muscularis.
What is the muscularis made up of?
Smooth muscle.
What does the muscularis do?
Smooth muscle churns the food and mixes it with gastric juices producing the chyme.
What is the outer layer of the stomach called?
The serosa.
What is one characteristic of the serosa?
It is smooth.
What does the serosa do?
It holds the stomach in place.
