Memory
Impairments in 13-50% of patients in the first week. Diminishes later. Majority suffer anterograde amnesia. Retrograde is less common. Encoding verbal is hard
Attention / speed of processing
40% show impaired attention. Devided is often impaired. Salient under time pressure
Language
21-38% suffer from aphasia in acute phase. May persist in mild form. Angular gyrius damage can result in writing and calculating impairments.
Perception
Visual field impairments can occur after posterior cerebral artery damage. Homonymous hemianopsia can result in hallucinations. Righ hemis results in visual and colour agnosia. Middle cerebral in neglect. Parietal lobe in body perception impairment
Executive functions
50% get acute impaiments. Abulia (inability ot initiate action) cerebellunm is important
Praxis and motor system
Damage to middle cerebral artery can result in apraxia (inabillity to carry out meaningful movements)
Social cognition
Right; casue social consequences
Lef: Control and inhibition. apathy loss of initiative and blunted affect are seen.
Vascular dementia
Most common type of dementia after alzheimer. Caused by single infarct in strategic location in the brain like thalamus. Commoly result of various major / minor infarcts that occur in brain.
Disorentation, delirium an d confusion
Risk factors inlcude age and dementia. Reduplicative paramnesia can be found in combitation with delirium. Belief that place/location is duplicated.
Fatigue and depression
Fatigue in 50%, depression; mood changes in almost all. Lack of insight
