Strengthen argument
1) Carefully read, break down, and completely understand the stimulus
2) Conclusion: What claim is the author making?
3) What facts or reason does the author uses to back up his conclusion
4) Are there unstated beliefs that link premises to the conclusion (the assumption is an unstated belief that must be true in order for the logic to be true)
5) Read the question stem and identify what it’s asking you
6) Remove “weakeners” and choice that rather clearly have no impact
4) Choose the answer that has the clearest impact
Can the answer be something that was not mentioned in the passage
yes, the answer to critical reasoning can be something that was not mentioned in the argument
–> strengthen the argument question may in some cases be the one that may be out of scope
Ways to strengthen an argument #1: Provide a premise to support or add support to the conclusion
In some strengthen the arguments, the passages contain conclusion without any supporting premise, so you can support the conclusion by adding a premise.
Ways to strengthen an argument #2: Explicitly state an assumption upon which the argument depends
When an argument involves an uncontroversial argument, the presence in the argument of that unstated assumption has no impact on the strengthening of the arguments.
BUT– when the argument relies upon a controversial assumption and if the assumption was not stated then it will not be supported by the conclusion then the addition of that assumption will be helpful in strengthening the argument
Ways to strengthen an argument #3: address and issue that could address the validity of the conclusion
An argument can be strengthened by addressing an issue that could affect the validity of the argument’s conclusion.
-> can say that some kind of fault in an experiment or something is accounted for and that will not occur in the scenario
Ways to strengthen an argument #4: Rule out an alternate cause an effect
an argument can be strengthed via ruling out an alternate cause and effect mentioned in the conclusion of the argument
Ways to strengthen an argument #5: Confirm a conclusion by changing, adding, or eliminating a variable
can be strnegthed an
