Subject +Verb
Check that subject+verb and object align
Adjective
Sentence work logically with what they modify
Pronouns
Make sure that the pronouns and nouns match
Make sure it makes sense
In many cases, our final step in answering a sentence correction question will be to eliminate versions that don’t convey a meaning that make sense and find a version that does convey a meaning that makes sense
Cross out double commas
White-tailed deer, found in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America, they are the smallest member of the North-American deer family. -> will not make sense if you cross out the double comma
Adjective placed between two verbs
Create ambiguity; Example: The tennish shoes that Adele borrower recently were taken from her car by a thief -> were the shoes recently taken by a thief or did she recently borrowed a shoe.
The author said in 2020 the price of her books would need to double.
Ambiguous: did the author make the statement in 2020? Or was the statement made about something that would occur by 2020?
In sentence correction
typically more than one flaw in same sentence
In sentence correction
remove the four versions that are the most clearly flawed -> there has to be something grammatically wrong
Eliminate choices because
we see why they are incorrect not because we can’t see why they are correct -> don’t move forward unless you understand clearly why they are not correct
Debating between two answers
seek to pinpoint the essential ways in which the sentence differ. There must be at lest one key point of difference between them that will render one more effective (correct) than the other
Setting up your scratch pad for elimination
when you are working with sentence correct, look at the choices/write them (a, b ,c, d, e) and cross them out as you move on
Intended meaning
There is no such thing as intended meaning in sentence correction. You just need to find the grammatically right answer -> any choice can be correct as long as its sentence is free from grammar errors and makes logical sense
Chane the meaning
It’s perfectly fine for an answer choice to change the meaning from the meaning conveyed by the original sentence
Awkward answer
It’s okay to have awkward answer as long as it’s grammatically correct
