Resolve The Paradox Flashcards
Paradox
exist two facts that at least seemingly, contradict others or cannot be true at the same time
Resolve the Paradox question
- > presents us with two statements or ideas that seem incompatible with each other.
- > That is, it appears that the two statements cannot or would not be true simultaneously. At the same time, in these scenarios, there are no actual contradictions
- > the correct answer to resolve the paradox question will be an option that reconciles the two seemingly incompatible statements
When we are given resolving a paradox problems
Choose the option that best explains how both ideas (facts) could simultaneously be true
-> In resolving a paradox, there is no contraction but there is a paradox and our job is to “resolve the paradox” through some logical reason

Don’t question the fact presented in resolve the paradox questions
we accept the statements in the passages as true, even though they apparently conflict. We then work to show how these statements can coexist. In other words, our job is to resolve the paradox
Don’t look for a conclusion in resolve the paradox questions
the point is not to find a conclusion drawn from a set of premises
Look for what could be true and not
what must be true
-> find something that, if true, explains the facts presented in the stimulus
Strategy for resolving the paradox questions
- Carefully read and completely understand the passage
- Identify the question type/what you have to do in order to answer the question
- Bullet-point the paradoxical facts
- Rephrase the paradox as a question (i.e How can it be the case that, on average, lifestyles did not improve, even though the percentage of people with college increased?)
- Analyze the answer choice
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 1: A choice that explains the wrong thing
incorrect choice are things where it says something other than how the fact can coexist
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 2: When the paradox is based on a difference between two things but an answer choice shows how the two are similar
we CAN NEVER use similarity between two things to explain a paradoxical difference between them
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 3: A choice that makes the situation more paradoxical
a situation can be made more paradoxical by making the two facts more contradictory or by adding to what seems to be a conflict in the scenario presented
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 4: An option that seems to contradict one of the two facts
we never resolve the paradox by challenging one of the facts stated in the stimulus. We accept the facts stated in the passage as true and then our job is to figure out a way to allow the two facts to coexist
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 5: An answer that introduces completely irrelevant information
Information that is completely irrelevant and will never resolve the paradox
(carefully consider whether the way in which you are connecting a choice to the paradox really makes sense in light of what has been presented in the stimulus and inlight of what goes in the real world)
Paradox Incorrect choice Type 6: Discusses the fact that makeup the paradox presented in the stimulus without explaining how they can coexist
discusses the facts mentioned in the stimulus without actually resolving the paradox
