Stomas Flashcards
What are the 3 types of ostomies?
- Colostomy
- Ileostomy
- Urostomy
What is stoma?
the intestine is connected to the outside of the abdominal wall to allow faeces to be diverted out of the body
What are the two different types?
- Can be either ileostomy or colostomy
2. Ie: the ileum or the colon is connected to the abdominal wall.
What are possible properties of stomas?
- end or loop
2. flush or spouted
Where are ileostomies found?
right side
Where are colostomies found?
left side
What is a urostomy?
connection of the ureter to the abdominal wall
When is a loop stomas done?
- when a defunctioning stoma is needed
- after a colonic resection, in order to allow the bowel anastomoses (re-connection) to heal properly they do a temporarily defunctioning loop stoma and reverse it a few months later
What is an end stoma?
if no anastomoses happens then an end colostomy is indicated where end of the bowel is connected to the outside and this is also usually permanent
Where are spout stomas done and why?
ileostomies because do not want the contents of the ileum (acidic, digestive enzymes) to be in direct contact with the skin
When are flush stomas done?
colostomies are sawn “FLUSH” to the skin, without spouting as colon contents less harmful
Why is a spout used?
for ileostomies + urostomies to prevent skin irritation from the small bowel contents produced by the stoma
What should you note in osce if stoma?
• Location (right = ileostomy, left = colostomy)
• Number of lumens = 2 = Loop, 1 = end (see picture)
• Is it flush or spouted?
-contents of bag
What can yoy comment on stoma contents?
- Solid / liquid?
- Color ?
- Blood mucus?
- INSPECT SURROUNDING SKIN
What would 1 lumen in RIF suggest?
end ileostomy or urostomy
