What are the 3 stages of non-acloholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)?

- Steatosis (fatty)
- Steatohepatitis (NASH) – inflammation
- Cirrohosis (irreversible)

What are RF for NAFLD?
A
- Obesity (truncal)
- insulin resistance/diabetes
- hyperlipidaemia
- hypertension
- metabolic syndrome
- short bowel syndrome
- TPN

What are signs of NAFLD?
A
- Signs of insulin resistance:
1. polyuria
2. polydipsia
3. acanthosis nigricans

What investigations and results are there in NAFLD?
A
- LFTs: AST:ALT elevated <1
- GGT/ALP may also be elevated
- Check glucose

What is the management for NAFLD?
A
- Diet and exercise
- controlling RFs (e.g., statins for hypercholesterolaemia, good blood sugar control for diabetics with metformin/thiazolidinediones)
