What is prolapse?
when any body part slips from it’s normal position
What is rectal prolapse?
when the rectum slides out of anal canal
What is rectal prolapse caused by?
long term straining and anything causing weakness of the pelvic floor muscles
What is internal rectal prolapse?
not dropping out yet
What is mucosal rectal prolapse?
the mucosa drops out
What is external rectal prolapse?
Entire rectum drops out
What are RF for rectal prolapse?
- Chronic constipation + straining
- Weakened pelvic floor muscles:
- Obestiy
What are reasons for weakened pelvic floor muscles?
- Natural birth
- Surgery
- Trauma
What is the epid of rectal prolapse?
old ppl
What is the presentation of rectal prolapse?
• Painless protruding mass following defecation
(or straining eg: coughing)
• Mucoid discharge
• Incontinence
How is rectal prolapse different to haemorrhoids?
- Not bleeding
2. Much much larger
What are the 1st line investigation for rectal prolapse?
- First line + Diagnostic = CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS
- OE: visualise
- ask patient to strain to elicit prolapse
What other tests may be considered for rectal prolapse?
- Anal manometry
- Colonoscopy (check for other pathologies)
- MRI – detailed imagery
