Infection of the soft tissues and collection of puss around the anus

- Perianal

- Anal fistula
- Crohn’s disease
- Constipation

What is the presentation of anal abscess?

- Perianal Pain
- Not related to defecation! (not fissures)
- Perianal Swelling and Tenderness

How can the presentation change if systemic?
A
Low grade fever & Tachycardia

What investigations are used for anal abscess?
A
- 1st line & DIAGNOSTIC = CLINICAL EXAMINATION
- Visualise abscess
- or EUA

A
CT / MRI for internal pelvic abscesses

What is the management of an anal abscess?
A
- 1st line – SURGICAL DRAINAGE OF ABSCESS
* ( + fistulotomy)
