Q

Manubrium

A

Forms part of bony framework of neck and thorax. Superior surface has jugular (supersternal) notch. On both sides are oval fossa for clavicular articulation. Inferior to these fossa are facets for attachment of costal cartilage. Demifacet at bottom

Q

Ribs

A

12 pairs - only costal cartilage of upper 7 ribs articulate with sternum. Remaining 5 pairs are false ribs. Costal cartilage of 8-10 articulate anteriorly with above cart. 11, 12 are floating. Intercostal spaces are filled with intercostal muscles.

Q

Atypical ribs

A

Rib 1 - flat in horizontal plane. Head articulates only with body of T1. Superior surface has scalene tuburcle. Rib 11 and 12 have no tuburcles or necks. Relatively short, little curve, pointed anteriorly.
