Precipitants of status?
- Severe metabolic disorders
- Infection
- Trauma
- Abrupt withdrawal of AEDs
- Treating absence seizures with carbamazepine
Management of status epileptcius?
Stabilize with ABC
Identify cause
-At 10 mins give IV lorazepam or buccal midazolam
-Wait 5 minutes, if not stopped give rapid onset anti-convulsant drug
-If no response can intensive care
Rapid onset anticonvulsant?
Phenytoin
What must you not give mor ethan 2 doses of?
Benzodiazepine
-Could cause respiratory distress
If someone is status epilepticus and has suggestion of alcoholism or impaired nutritional status give them?
Thiamine
