What is frontotemporal dementia?
- Neurodegenerative proteinopathy
- Protein aggregation causing cell damage
- Early onset dementia
Who gets frontotemporal dementia?
25% genetic cause
Can be part of a MND
Rarer form of dementia, usually early onset before age 65
Presentation of frontotemporal dementia?
- Behavioural variation
- 2 forms of primary progressive aphasia
- Early frontal features- disinhibition, apathy, loss of empathy, stereotyped or compulsive behaviours, hyperorality, disinhibition
- Early loss of insight
Investigation of frontotemporal dementia?
MRI: Atrophy of frontotemporal lobes
SPECT: Frontotemporal, decreased metabolism
CSF increased tau/normal amyloid
Chill treatment of frontotemporal dementia?
Controlled access to food/money/internet
- Structured activities
- Power of attorney
- Support- MND nurse specialist if coexistent MND
Pharmacological treatment?
Trial of trazadone/antipsychotics
Genetics involved?
Some people it is related to C9ORF gene
How does FTD contrast from AD?
Behaviour chnages are initial pesentation, whereas in AD behaviour cnages are later on presentation
