State of consciousness: Biorhythms Flashcards
Consciousness
self-awareness
free-will
Wakened state
Can be altered
Pre/sub consciousness
Personal memories/ experiences where we are not presently aware but can bring to awareness when a que is presented
Unconscious
Repressed, traumatic/unpleasant experiences
Instinctual (drives are innate)
Not easily accessible nor subject to personal control (Beyond free will)
Altered states
Hypnotic
Asleep
Meditative
Drug-induced
Non consciousness
Death Coma Demented No self-awareness No personal control
Biological/ circadian rhythms
Aka “biological clock”; daily cycle of sleep and wakefulness
Regulates the timing of sleep/wake cycle
Genetically programmed:
Day/night cycles
Changing of seasons
Seasonal reproductive cycles (animals)
Last just over 24 hrs in humans
Ganglion triggers SCN in the hypothalamus and signals pineal glad-> melatonin
Free-running cycles
Remove all external cues (living in Vegas (don’t know what time it is; never dark)
Keeps you awake
Let’s ppl fall asleep when tiered and awake when no longer able to sleep
Suprachiasmic nucleus (scn)
A distinct cluster of neuron in the hypothalamus
Responds to light
Stimulates the production of melatonin
Signals the pineal gland
Melatonin
Hormone produced by the pineal gland
Responsible for drowsiness/sleep
Production decreased half-way through the sleep cycle
Reticular activating system (RAS)
Located in the central brain stem Involved with: Physical movements (walking and running) Senses (pain, breathing, HR, and BP) Levels of alertness Sleep/wake cycle Various conscious states
