Emotion Flashcards
Evolutionary theory
SURVIVAL!!
Emotions have adaptive value (drives behavior and ensure continuation of the species)
Snake(danger; threat to survival)->arousal-> “flight response”
James-Lange theory
Snake(danger)-> 😧 (physiological arousal) -> “I’m shaking so I must be afraid” arousal proceeds emotion
Canon- Brad theory
Snake-> biological(limbic) and cognitive(cortex) happen simultaneously at the same time
Schachter-singer (2 factor) theory
Snake(F on exam)-> 😕-> biological arousal then a cognitive appraisal based on context like fear? (Snake) disappointment (grade) despair? Anxiety?
Spillover effect
How intensely we experience emotions
how we interpret what our emotions are
Autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic ns: activate arousal (biological arousal)
Parasympathetic ns: clams the ns and body ( homeostasis)
Limbic system
Hippocampus- memory formation
Amygdala- fear/ anger STRong emotion
Hypothalamus- drives of hunger, thirst, sex
Expressions of emotions
Body language
Voice tone
Facial expression
IMPORTANT for accurate communication
Evolution: survival= who is a enemy or friend
Socialization: interpersonal (fam, friend, mate)
Basic facial expressions
Innate: Studies with babies; normal and blind
Universal: PAUL EKMAN although the degree of emotions vary along w/ influence of personal context/culture
6 universal expressions
Happiness sadness surprise fear anger disgust
Facial feedback effect
The notion that not only does the face express emotions but that the expression impacts/influences emotions Same applies to bod language Ex. Look happy and u will be happy Looks sad u will be sad
Stress
Individuals perceive and respond to dynamics (stressors) in their environment; perception can be Positive (eustresss) or negative (distress)
Stressors
Anything that produces stress (negative or positive)
Catastrophes: unpredictable large disasters
Significant life events
daily problems
Acute stress
Manifestation of symptoms of depression and Anxiety
Less than 3 months
Interfering with personal activities
Chronic stress
Manifestation of symptoms of depression and Anxiety
3+ months
Causing severe personal distress
Intervention must occur and danger to self and others
Immunodeficiency
Weakening of the immune system
Consequences of chronic stress
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Chronic and persistent stress episodes
Characterized by reexperiencing the emotional impact of the original Trumatic event
Malingering
Pretending to have an illness to avoid consequences
Factitous
Pretending to have an illness to gain attention
Psychosomatic
Physical illness caused by emotional stress
Mind can make ur bod sick
Hans Selyes General adaptation syndrome
The body’s natural adaptive response to stress that is composed of three stages:
Alarm reaction: sympathetic ns; activates in response to a stressor
Resistance: chronic state of sns activation/arousal
Exhaustion: Health risks due to chronic stress response
Emotion
Human experience involving: biological(physical) arousal, expression, conscious awareness, and cognitive labeling of arousal and behavioral response
