Stages of learning Flashcards
What are the three stages of learning?
Cognitive;
Associative;
Autonomous.
What can the three stages sometimes be called?
Fitts and Posner stages.
Which is the earliest stage of learning?
Cognitive.
Which stage may involve a lot of trail and error from the performer?
Cognitive.
A new performer is likely to be in which stage?
Cognitive.
What should coaches do to help develop cognitive players?
They should limit the information given to stop cognitive overload - 3 pieces of information at a time.
Which type of performer is most likely to experience cognitive overload?
A cognitive performer as they cannot process large amounts of information.
What is cognitive overload?
Where the performer is overloaded with information and cannot comprehend it all, usually in cognitive performers.
How can cognitive overload be prevented?
Only giving a maximum of 3 pieces of information to a cognitive performer at one time (more than 3 pieces will overwhelm them).
Once a skill is learned fully, what must happen to stop the performer dropping back into earlier phases?
They must practice the skill regularly to maintain the autonomous phase.
Why is it important for cognitive performers to understand where they messed up?
This prevents them messing up in the future and prevents developing poor form.
Which type of feedback is most important in reinforcing experiences of success in cognitive performers?
Extrinsic feedback of success encourages performers.
Which phase is commonly referred to as the “motor phase”?
Associative.
What happens in the associative phase?
The performer practices and compares the movements produced with their mental images.
How long does it take to reach the final stage?
It is different for each person with many people never reaching the stage.
