What are the four types of guidance?
- Visual;
- Verbal;
- Manual;
- Mechanical.
Visual guidance (Definition:)
A demonstration of the required task that the performer can watch (it is seen).
How can visual guidance be given?
As a demonstration from the coach, another performer, through media formats, books, charts or video analysis.
What is the intention of visual guidance for a beginner?
To create a mental framework that can be used as a reference point for future practise.
A coach may use what type of guidance to inform a rock climber where to place their foot?
Visual.
What are the advantages of visual guidance?
- Can be used to highlight specific weaknesses;
- Creates a mental image for the performer.
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
- Demonstration must be completely accurate;
- Must not overload the performer.
Which feedback is nearly always used in conjunction with verbal feedback?
Visual feedback.
Verbal guidance (Definition:)
An explanation of the task, nearly always used in conjunction with visual guidance.
A coach giving a basketball player advice during play is what type of guidance?
Verbal.
How is verbal guidance used with cognitive performers?
Highlighting key points in the demonstration which helps build the correct mental image of performance.
How is verbal guidance used with autonomous performers?
The advice given is much more technical and detailed which compliments tactical advice given.
What type of guidance is given here; “stay close and follow the movements of the opposite attacker”?
Verbal as the player is being told by the coach.
What are the problems with verbal guidance?
- Can cause a cognitive overload;
- May lose concentration;
- Language must be understandable.

Guiding the performer using physical support.
