Response time Flashcards
Reaction time (Definition:)
The time between the onset of stimulus and the onset of movement.
Response time (Definition:)
The time between the start and end of a task.
Movement time (Definition:)
The time between the onset of a stimulus and the finish of a task.
What is the formula for response time?
Response = Reaction + Movement.
In a 100 metre sprint, what would be the response time?
The time from the gun being shot to crossing he 100 metre mark.
In a 100 metre sprint, what would be the reaction time?
The time between the gun being shot and the start of physical movement.
In a 100 metre sprint, what would be the movement time?
The time from the start of physical movement to finishing the race.
What are the factors affecting response time?
- Number of stimulus (Hick’s Law);
- Psychological refractory period;
- Single channel hypothesis.
- Physiological elements (Age, Gender, Height)
What is Hick’s Law?
The more options a player has the slower the reaction time would be.
What is the correlation between reaction time and number of choices? (Hick’s Law)
There is a negative correlation, reaction time decreases as number of choices increases.
What does PRP stand for?
Psychological Refractory Period.
What can be used to explain why ‘dummies’ or ‘faints’ work?
Psychological Refractory Period.
What physiological factors make someone more likely to have a higher reaction time?
Age = Younger Gender = Male Height = Shorter
What physiological factors make someone more likely to have a lower reaction time?
Age = Older Gender = Women Height = Taller
What is the Single Channel Hypothesis?
Once a stimulus has been recognised and is in the process of being dealt with any secondary stimuli must wait until the first is processed before it can be dealt with.
