Learning transfers Flashcards
Skill Transfer (Definition):
The effect of learning and performance of one skill on the learning and performance of another.
Positive Transfer (Definition):
When the learning of one skill helps the learning of another.
Negative Transfer (Definition):
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another.
Zero Transfer (Definition):
When the learning of one skill has no impact on the learning of another.
Bilateral Transfer (Definition):
When the learning of one skill is passed across the body from limb to limb.
When is positive transfer likely to occur?
When two skills have a similar shape and form, they are similar so the movements of one skill help the action of the other.
Give an example of skill transfer in the context of a tennis serve and basketball pass.
This is positive transfer as the arm actions are similar in both.
What is the name for when one skill hinders the learning of another?
Negative Transfer.
Give an example of skill transfer in the context of a tennis serve and badminton serve.
Negative transfer, the wrist actions are very different and therefore the skills are affected negatively.
When is negative transfer likely to occur?
When there might be some familiarity with the environments of the two skills which could cause confusion of the two.
Give an example of skill transfer in the context of a swimming arm actions and foot placement in rock climbing.
There is zero transfer as there is nothing in common and therefore no transfer occurs.
When is zero transfer likely to occur?
When the two skills are highly dissimilar and there is nothing in common between the two.
Give an example of skill transfer in the context of a shot in football being transferred from left to right foot.
Bilateral transfer as the footballer learns to shoot on both feet.
What must a teacher do to ensure positive transfer?
Making sure training is realistic, to create a more relevant representation of the game. He should also make sure that one skill is learned well before moving on to a more advanced skill.
Which learning transfer is often refereed to as “laterilasation”?
Bilateral transfer.
