Imperialism
the domination of one region or country by another country or region
David Livingstone
Scottish missionary and explorer who traveled into sub-saharan Africa in the 1860s. Henery Stanley famously searched for and found him.
Social Darwinism
Belief that applied the concepts of Darwinism to groups of people in society. This theory believed that some people were naturally superior. This was used to justify imperialism.
Scramble for Africa
The competition among European countries to claim lands in Africa.
Berlin conference
1884-1885 meetings in Germany, where European leaders divided the lands of Africa amoung themselves with no regard for the African societies that already inhabited the land.
Shaka
leader of the Zulu tribal nation in southern Africa who used efficient military tactics to resist the dutch and British armies for many years
King Leopold II
Leader of Belgium who claimed the congo as his own personal coloney; he treated the people of Congo cruelly, leading to millions of deaths
East India Company
Company that ruled India on behalf of the British government untill 1858
Sepoy Mutiny
1857 uprising that began when the Indian Soldiers were punished for refusing to follow orders that would violate their religious beliefs.
Raj
Period of direct British governmental rule over India that begins in 1858 during the region of Queen Victoria
