Squint Flashcards
What is squint (strabismus) characterised by?
Misalignment of the visual axes
What are the two main types of squint?
Concomitant and paralytic
What may uncorrected squint lead to?
Amblyopia
What is amblyopia?
The brain fails to fully process inputs from one eye and favours the other eye
What causes concomitant squint?
Imbalance in extraocular muscles
Which type of concomitant squint is more common?
Convergent
What causes paralytic squint?
Paralysis of extraocular muscles
How can a squint be detected?
Corneal light reflection test
Describe the corneal light reflection test.
Hold a light source 30cm from the child’s face to see if the light reflects symmetrically on the pupils
What test is used to identify the nature of a squint?
Cover test
What is the procedure for the cover test?
Ask the child to focus on an object, cover one eye, observe movement of uncovered eye, cover other eye and repeat test
What is a recommended management strategy for squint?
Referral to secondary care
How may eye patches help in the management of squint?
They may help prevent amblyopia
