Eyelid problems Flashcards
What is blepharitis?
Inflammation of the eyelid margins typically leading to a red eye
Blepharitis can cause discomfort and irritation of the eyes.
What is a stye?
Infection of the glands of the eyelids
A stye can be external or internal depending on the affected glands.
What are the two types of stye?
- External (hordeolum externum)
- Internal (hordeolum internum)
External styes are caused by infection of the glands of Zeis or Moll, while internal styes infect the Meibomian glands.
What is a chalazion?
Retention cyst of the Meibomian gland presenting as a firm painless lump
A chalazion may resolve spontaneously, but some cases require surgical drainage.
What is entropion?
In-turning of the eyelids
This condition can lead to irritation of the eyeball and may require surgical intervention.
What is ectropion?
Out-turning of the eyelids
Ectropion can cause dryness and irritation of the conjunctiva.
What is the management for a stye?
Includes hot compresses and analgesia
Topical antibiotics are recommended only if there is associated conjunctivitis.
True or False: A chalazion typically presents as a painful lump in the eyelid.
False
A chalazion is usually firm and painless.
Fill in the blank: A _______ is an infection of the glands of the eyelids.
[stye]
What may occur as a result of an internal stye?
Residual chalazion (Meibomian cyst)
Internal styes can lead to the formation of a chalazion if not treated properly.
